1920 - 1929
October 1922 – BBC radio started
December 1922 – John Reith became general manager
September 1923 – First edition of The Radio Times, listing radio programmes on offer
February 1924 – Greenwich Time Singular (GTS) ‘pops – Invented by Royal Sir Frank Watson Dyson and John Reith. Six ‘pips’ designed to mark the precise start every hour on BBC radio, gts heard on radio 4 still today.
January 1927 – The British Broadcasting Corporation established by royal charter
November 1929 – John Logie Baird tests television.

1930 - 1939
May 1932 – Broadcasting House Opens
December 1932 – King George V addresses The British Empire
1934 – The ‘type A’ microphone introduced
November 1936 – BBC television service officially opens
May 1937 – First BBC outside broadcast
January 1938 – First foreign language broadcast in Arabic

1940 - 1949
January 1942 – Desert Island Discs, format for interview programs
October 1946 – Woman’s Hour introduced
October 1946 – For the children, first children based tv shows, ‘Muffin’ the lovable puppet accompanied by Annette Mills on the piano.
January 1948 – News Comes to Television Service
London 1948 – the first televised Olympic games, with now 100,000 households own a TV
July 1949 – First weather broadcast bulletin.

1950 - 1959
May 1950 – The Archers, longest soap opera began
October 1950 – Parliamentary coverage shown
June 1853 – Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II shown live
April 1958 – Radiophonic Workshop established, used to create sound effects (such as Doctor Who’s theme at the time)
October 1959 – Blue Peter begins 50 yearlong running.

1960 - 1969
June 1960 – Television Centre Opens, used for shows such as Fawlty Towers, Monty Python, and Strictly come dancing.
November 1963 – Doctor Who begins
July 1967 – First full colour TV service in Europe on BBC 2
September 1967 – BBC Radio 1 goes live.

1970 - 1979
January 1970 – Open University goes to air
April 1972 – First Children news show (news round)
September 1974 – CEEFAX, provided teletext service to the world, information including news, weather, and sport. Operation stopped in 2012.
January 1979 – Life On Earth, David Attenborough became widely renowned on the BBC for natural history.

1980 – 1989
July 1981 – Wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer shown live, with an estimated audience of 750 million, most popular every TV broadcast.
January 1982 – BBC microcomputer launched, inspiring youngsters to become involved with new media and computer industry.
January 1983 – Breakfast Time – brought by Frank Bough, Selina Scott, and Weatherman Francis Wilson.
February 1985 – EastEnders, most watched program of all time broadcasted.
July 1985 – Live Aid, new global campaign multi venue music festival launched, to raise funs for Ethiopia famine, large scale satellite links and broadcasts, estimated 4000 million viewers over 60 countries watching live.

1990 – 1999
September 1995 – DAB gets green light, research and development technology, with interference free quality programs allowed for successful digital radio.
November 1997 – First BBC News 24 hour channel service
December 1997 – bbc.co.uk launched, after recognising online potential.
September 1998 – First digital BBC TV channel released, BBC Choice (eventually became known as BBC Three)

2000 Onwards
May 2004 – Strictly returns with relaunch.
July 2007 – BBC Iplayer, see what you want when you want, streaming technology, allowed for simple catchup
September 2007 – BBC Pacific Quay, first all-digital BBC centre, opened by PM Gordon Brown
March 2008 – BBC Araba and Persia television.
November 2008 – Red Button invented, to extend TV viewing on digital TVs
September 2010 – Super Hi-Vision pictures SHV pictures broadcast to Tokyo from London, showing advances in the system.
July 2011 – 3d Tennis coverage live, showing first 3d live coverage.
London 2012 – First digitally logged Olympics with over 52 million viewers.
October 2012 – Audio enters new dimensions, allowing for more platforms on the BBC, iPlayer now on smartphones and across other ‘on the go’ devices.
December 2012 – Connected Red Button, new service bringing TV, Radio and Online together.
